Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba / Maidenhair in the rain

Ginkgo Biloba
Goethe's poem -  15 September 1815

This leaf from a tree in the East,
Has been given to my garden.
It reveals a certain secret,
Which pleases me and thoughtful people.
Does it represent One living creature
Which has divided itself?
Or are these Two, which have decided,
That they should be as One?
To reply to such a Question,
I found the right answer:
Do you notice in my songs and verses
That I am One and Two?

Maidenhair / Ginkgo Biloba leavesThe Ginkgo Biloba is the world's oldest living species of tree and can live a long time, some up to a thousand years. It is truly an inspiration to me and his unusual fanned leaves, make him one of my favorite tree.

Every time when I sit under his leaves crown it was like spending a quiet moment in an altar of God, treasuring his greatness, tenacity and his power of defying time (The Ginkgo is a living fossil, dating back 270 million years),

Other place where you can find information about Ginkgo Biloba is  Cor Kwant's website.

Even for centuries it was thought to be extinct in the wild, perhaps was saved by Buddhist monks from China who have been thought that Ginkgo has medicinal powers. You can find many varieties of Ginkgo Biloba: Autumn Gold, Saratoga, Jade Butterflies, Chase Manhattan, Majestic Butterflies, Pendula,  Mariken;  and is a very easy to grow, because tolerate urban pollution, poorly-drained soil, drought, and a variety of adverse conditions.

I was very happy to discover a multitude of Maidenhair Trees in Vancouver area, and I've created a Google map, in the hope that it will be useful to other people who love this tree and want to spend magical moments around.

Maybe some of you know more locations where other historical Ginkgo trees grow. I would be happy if you let me know about and I will update the map with information provided by you.
