Pelargoniums Trained as Cascade Bonsai

Well, you already know that  our "Edible, fragrant, very useful, showy, flowering, drought resistant, little care and very forgiving ..."Scented Pelargoniums/ geraniums might be trained as cascade and semi-cascade bonsai.  We try to respect the classical lines defined in bonsai books for those styles, training them long time to bend downward their trunks to cascade below the bottom of the containers.

Some varieties of scented pelargoniums seem perfect, however, to be trained up  in those styles: they have woody stems and a bushy growing habit and tolerate growing downward.

Marie Thomas with rose-vanilla scented foliage and the citrus varieties: Prince of Orange and Frensham Lemon make really nice specimens.

Well, usually we start trainings with younger plants, whose apexes of the trunks are flexible enough to be wired and curved in a various angles before became woody.  Most of them make  multiple trunk cascades, vary in length with branches alternating to the right and left of the trunks covered by small leaves which respond well to reducing their size once the plant was moved in bonsai pot.














Wiring need to be reapplied many times because usually the tips of the branches flares upward in search of the light, but although we spent many hours to train them...
